The Geek Citadel E3 2017 Awards!

E3 2017 is in the books, but now it’s time to review the highlights of the show.  I don’t do nominees (the print shop would charge me more for those), here at Geek Citadel we do winners!

Best Other Worlds (Best VR Game) of E3 2017

Winner:  ARCHANGEL

Everyone tries to describe what it’s like to go to E3.  My take?  Imagine you go to a big festival like Coachella or Lollapalooza, and when you get there all the stages have been pushed together so they are all circling you and every band is onstage at the same time screaming as loud as they can.  With VR a reality at the show these days, you just put in headphones.

Plenty of VR games were shown and some interesting takes on what being transported to another world could do for the medium.  Between the three VR platforms one game was hell-bent on mastering all of them.  I had originally viewed Archangel at a VR meet-up in Austin during SXSW, and seeing the latest build running not only on the HTC but also running beautifully on PSVR with PS4 Pro sold me that this will be a corner-stone of VR development.  The fantasy of stepping into the pilot seat of a giant mech is incredible enough, but the crucial factor behind our decision to award Archangel is heavy emphasis on story and the difficult but fair gameplay.  Archangel is easy to pick up, but even the demos could shred me to ribbons in a matter of minutes, and still keeps me hungry to explore the story of the resistance.

King Of The Ring E3 2017

Winner: DRAGON BALL FIGHTER Z

No one is more shocked by this than me.  I came into the week fully prepared to give this award to Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite, thinking it was a light year for the Fighting Game Genre.  I was wrong, and it hurts so good.  I think we all have mild expectations regarding Dragon Ball games at this point, seemingly running through the same story mode year after year.  When it was revealed Arc Systems was handling a new Dragonball, my ears perked up, what a crazy pairing.  What I did not realize was how amazing the final product would look.  A 3 vs 3 fighter, prompting the most epic battles I have ever seen out of a Dragon Ball game.  Not since the release of the original Budokai have I been anticipating a new Dragon Ball game.  With a measly six characters to demo my only question was “Who’s Next?”

Best Team Player E3 2017

Winner: MONSTER HUNTER WORLD

One question: WHY HAS THIS TAKEN SO LONG?!  The Monster Hunter series cult success has always baffled me.  A game with an intensely loyal fanbase here in the states that have mostly subsisted on the series in the handheld realm, but seemingly never got the proper console edition a game like this could soar on.  I remember when the game popped up on Wii, but… let’s be real here.  So now the game is coming to PS4 and what a shock, it looks incredible, the hunting grounds are extensive with large creatures running around, and other players can drop in and join the fun from the Playstation Network.  Again, why has this taken so long?  This looks like a game finally in danger of getting me properly immersed in the world of Monster Hunter!

Most Extreme Action E3 2017

Winner: Wolfenstein 2 The New Colossus

I will admit, it’s ironic that we gave Most Extreme Action to a game and series who’s best moments can sometimes be found in it’s more subdued and calmer moments. Wolfenstein is has a masterful rhythm , and the developers at Machine Games brilliantly know when to pull back and when to reach for intense packed moments.  Moments like keeping cool during a casual conversation with a Nazi in Papa Joe’s Diner with our face on the Wanted Poster by the door, seemingly only intensify the moment when BJ is riding the Mech Wolf!  New weapons, new stakes, new ways to cause mayhem and destruction and for the first time in series history, Wolfenstein is about to come home to Amerikan shores!

Independent Spirit (Best Indie) E3 2017

WINNER: MOONLIGHTER

Let’s have a minute for the little guys.  At an event like E3 it is easy to slobber over the Anthems and Call Of Duties of the show, but it is important to take a step back and marvel at the scrappy upstarts of the gaming world.  Pleanty of great contenders, but one unique experience called Moonlighting particularly caught my eye.  In it you play as a shop-keeper in a Zelda-esque world who moonlights as an adventurer exploring a nearby series of dungeons.  Exploring the depths of the monster-filled ruins, our hero collects items that he then later sells from his item shop during the day.  Imagine if Minish Cap had a blend of store-front simulator to it.  Got that image?  You’re looking it up on Steam right now, aren’t you?  Thought so.

Large Turnout (Best MMO) E3 2017

Winner: Destiny 2

Coming up to Destiny this week I was skeptical.  When Destiny 1 came out and made it’s way to my PS4 it felt like a game incomplete, and somewhat straining to explain it’s own late half of the game.  With each subsequent Expansion Pack, I’ve been getting further and further behind.  The announcement of Destiny 2 gave me hope that we could set the board back to one and get tethered to a new kind of experience out of Destiny.  Well, color me impressed when Bungie went above and beyond to keep the elements of the first entry that worked well, but establish a new feel for the game that kept this from feeling like a glorified expansion.  A renewed focus on narrative driven PVE has my attention refocused on the new adventure offered within Destiny.

BEST OF SHOW E3 2017

WINNER: MARVEL’S SPIDER-MAN

It was a tough one, especially in a year that hosted a new Mario game.  This had me wracking my brain to be sure.  In the end though…. GOD SPIDER-MAN HAS NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD!  I don’t mean in the games, I don’t even mean in the comics, throw in the movies because this is the most epic 8 minutes of spider-man anything I have witnessed in my years as a fan.  And don’t get me wrong I love those first two movies as strong as members of my family.  Somehow the Insomniac team have been able to approximate their own formula to do for Spider-man, what Rocksteady did for Batman.  It’s a while off, but the next time I see this game I want 5 minutes to swing through New York.  My mind reels over the chance to explore the Big Apple in Red and Blue leotards.  Spider-man was hands down the best looking game of E3 2017.

BECAUSE I SAY SO (EDITOR’S CHOICE)

WINNER: PROJECT CARS 2

Cards on the table, I have never been able to get into a Racing Sim ever.  At all.  We were brought in for demonstrations of Namco Bandai’s newest titles and… I’m humbled to have to admit this, Project Cars had me blown away and feverishly interested.  The approach taken by the team at Slightly Mad Studios is on a level so cutting edge the games had me rooting.  The pioneers of Dynamic Weather systems in game design are now bringing laser-scanned recreations of famous racetracks into the mix.  They’ve altered the design of the cars texture and suspension, giving their cars a one-of-a-kind feel as they grip the road.  Cards on the table, I’m not sure I can fully keep up let alone comprehend the level of detail the team has laid out before me but it was compelling to hear one of the most passionate cases made for any game at this show.  To my surprise it happened to come from a Racer.

WINNER: PWND

I had to talk this game up to just about everyone.  I mean, EVERYONE!  For starters it’s art style was refreshingly and inviting with an appropriate amount of cartoonishness.  The characters in this Rocket-launching death battle are unique with different attributes and lampoonish behaviors.  Second, it ran at a blistering speed with tight and responsive controls.  With the right push, this could turn out to have an incredible competitive scene.  But I believe it came down to my third point… IT WAS A RIOT!  In Pwnd the object in not just to kill your opponent, once your target was down and desperately crawling away from you, your goal is to walk up to his corpse and PWN him (in this case do a prolonged dance over his body).  Pwning is the only way to gain points for your team and characters are sometimes forced to carry their bounties off to secluded parts of the maps to enact their Pwnage.  Whole strategies involving the temporary shields exist, leaving the player searching for strategies to protect themselves during Pwnage or even protect their teammates.  Just gotta see it, you’ll understand why I had to award PWND an editor’s Choice Award.

Bill Nye Saves The World

0

Who is Bill Nye?

William Sanford “Bill” Nye, popularly known as Bill Nye the Science Guy, is an American science educator, television presenter, and mechanical engineer. Scientist, comedian, teacher, and author, Bill Nye is best known as the host of the PBS children’s science show “Bill Nye the Science Guy” (1993–1998), and for his many subsequent appearances in popular media as a science educator.

Currently, Nye is The Planetary Society’s CEO. It’s the world’s largest non-profit space interest group with members in 130 countries. Cofounded by Carl Sagan, Bruce Murray and Louis Friedman, the organization’s mission is to empower the world’s citizens to advance space science and exploration. Nye joined The Planetary Society as a Charter Member in 1980. Nye’s engineering and management experience enabled him to take the lead and play a hands-on role in making programs like LightSail® a success.

Nye earned a degree in mechanical engineering at Cornell University and spent over 20 years working as an engineer until he combined his dual love of science and comedy to create “Bill Nye the Science Guy.” As a student at Cornell University, he was introduced to the wonders of astronomy in a class taught by Professor Carl Sagan, cofounder of The Planetary Society, which Nye now leads.

After graduating from Cornell University, Bill worked for the Boeing Corporation, Sundstrand Data Control (now Honeywell), and a few other engineering firms in the Seattle area. The U.S. Department of Justice also recruited Bill for his unique technical expertise and pedagogical skills.

From 1992 to 1998, Bill was one of the writers, producers and talent for the Emmy award-winning “Bill Nye the Science Guy” TV series co-produced by Buena Vista Television (Disney) and KCTS (Seattle public television).

His new series “Bill Nye Saves The World” will debut on Netflix in spring 2017.

Bill has authored several books, including New York Times Bestseller “Undeniable,” “Unstoppable” and his latest, “Everything All at Once,” which will release in July of 2017.  In addition to leading The Planetary Society, he travels the world lecturing on the importance of science, space exploration, and inspiring generations of young people to change the world.

Activity Since the Show

After the conclusion of “Bill Nye the Science Guy” Nye didn’t disappear from the world. Instead, Bill used his personality to be a face for science on our News and Entertainment Media. Bill Nye has appeared on numerous talk shows and news programs in America usually invited on to explain a scientific principle and more recently he’s been on to talk about Climate Change. He is truly a fixture in popular culture and his role has been as an advocate for science. It was only a matter of time for Bill to get a new show.

Why Save the World Now?

It’s hard to deny that the US (and the world at large) is politically polarized and that this polarization is having an incredible impact on everything we do, say and think as citizens. In the United States, only 70% of us believe the threat Climate Change is an issue we face and only 53% believe it is caused by human activity. Contrast that with the 97% of Scientists who agree that it is absolutely happening and is caused by man. This Map breaks down the polling in several helpful ways. It’s been 20 years since his last show and as Bill Nye says himself in the show “A lot has changed. but one thing hasn’t: the process of science, how we know what we know.” (Episode 1 introduction of Bill Nye Saves the World) Bill positions BNStW as an “Adult-Children’s” show NOT meant for kids but for citizens with voting rights. Bill isn’t seeking to inspire teens to pursue science as much as to ask adults to embrace or get out of the way of scientific progress politically and specifically to appreciate all that science has done for them and its efforts to “Save the World.”

In continuing Bill Nye’s mission to educate the public and help steer public policy in a direction that will benefit all of society Nye aims to cover topics including Global Warming, The Gender Spectrum, Violence in Video Games, GMOs, and even the (possible) Prehistoric Martian Invasion! (Panspermia Paper)

Positive Elements

The skits on BNStW are very much like what you’d see on The Daily Show or Last Week Tonight in their quality and comedic format.  Bill has managed to stay just as comedically sharp as ever and doesn’t cease to amaze with his wit and comedic timing. Rated-G Bill was great but PG-13 Bill is even better.

The set is gorgeous and really sets the tone of being an “Open-Lab/Study” that makes the topics seem less “ivory tower” contained and more available to a wider audience.

The show makes good use of field pieces to break up the live experiments and on-stage demonstrations. Even better is the “I need a minute” segments where Nye spends about 60 seconds or less getting personal and expressing his view on the current topic in a very candid way.

The panels are for the most part well stocked with credentialed people (just as are the correspondents) who engage in some interesting dialogue with Nye about the various dimensions of the episode Topic.

Bill’s demonstrations of scientific principles with such visual aides as “Germ balls” and Acidity solutions hit right where his former show excelled. They illustrate points that are very difficult to communicate without lots of supporting foundational knowledge.

Upon rewatching the original series this week I noticed a few impressive elements and the thing that really surprised me for a show in the mid-nineties was the surprisingly progressive diversity of the show. BNStW is fairly good at keeping this a hallmark of the show not only as far as PoC and women but also the gender spectrum.

There are a few great celebrity cameos on the show who help Nye demonstrate some surprising and dramatic feats of science. These cameos help to get people who might not otherwise be engaged with the topics at hand be a little bit more receptive to them.

Any Potential Problems

They tried using a strange moving stage partition that required a bit of miming from bill to really explain the use of. This caused some small hiccups that Nye as the professional comedian he is was easily able to laugh off.

Maybe the Netflix format wasn’t the best way to do this show. Why? When the Cosmos A Spacetime Odyssey reboot was airing on Fox in 2014 one of the best parts of the event was the articles that would grapple with the topics outlined and start some interesting conversations in the public space inspiring various pieces on each topic. Unfortunately, with the Binge-watch style of release that Netflix does for its show distribution, we lose some of this periodic review and discussion. While I’m sure some of the more controversial episodes will be adequately engaged and critiqued I fear that 80% of what Nye wanted to say with BNStW will be lost under the heap of the controversial 20%. This is not necessarily a flaw of the show but a challenge of the Netflix distribution model.

BNStW has tried the panel setup used more commonly by Real Time with Bill Maher and Larry Wilmore’s (now canceled) The Nightly Show but mostly fails to have a productive and meaningful discussion from it. In a few cases Bill basically just beat up on the people from way out of the mainstream or let guest’s like the Monsanto Chief Technology Officer Dr. Robert T. Fraley off the hook on the questionable ethics of the company.

The show seems to have a somewhat difficult time speaking to people who don’t already agree with the premise put forth. This is a common issue with neoliberalism, it has a difficult time talking to those who don’t already agree with them and this is a point I make because the show title suggests it can save the world but it’s not really achieving its own mission. I’d be curious to see some discussion around a better way to speak to the people who aren’t convinced but are willing to listen. There are only about 10% of people who, on the issue of climate change, are basically immovable which means about 20+% can be moved and should be (based on a 2012 poll by the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication). But it’s not just climate change, Nye also covers topics like Alternative Medicine and fake facts that need to be understood by the receptive section of the population that refuses to recognize their toxic effect on society.

Suggested Topics for Season 2

Bill Nye didn’t quite save the world this season and there’s plenty more left to cover and some topics to revisit but which ones will Americans (who will be going into midterm elections this time next year) and the world at large most need to be aware of in the next year?

Philosophy – Bill Nye has had a dismissive view of the field until fairly recently when Olivia Goldhill of Quartz wrote a critical article of Nye in which Goldhill built a case for philosophy creating the foundation upon which science stands. Nye deserves credit for taking what the author had to say into consideration and changing his mind (as he had in the past about GMOs) when presented with new information.

Nuclear Energy – In Nye’s episode on Earth is a Hot Mess he takes (with the help of his panelists) a fairly anti-nuclear energy stance as a renewable energy. It could be a calculation that the public is simply unwilling to begin to consider Nuclear energy as Nye seems to allude to when he mentions the city of Olympia, Washington abandoning a new Nuclear Power Plant.

Electrical Energy Storage – In the same episode Earth is a Hot Mess Nye and his panel briefly discuss the ways to store excess generated power for use when the elements do not provide the necessary levels of energy to power homes and factories. Efforts by such companies as Elon Musks’s TESLA to create a more efficient battery not just for cars but for homes seems very relevant but wasn’t directly discussed. It’s an area of science that we need to solve and the people who discover it will be very wealthy when they do.

Social Justice – One of the most interesting things in how our approach to issues such as climate change is how it affects certain people. In Nye’s episode Designer Babies, this topic is briefly mentioned. Certain populations getting affected where others do not. In the podcast and television program, Adam Ruins Everything Adam Conover speaks with Conservationist Rosie Cooney from the ICUN who talks about how banning Trophy Hunting adversely affects not only the animals in the food web (prey) but also the human populations who rely not only on the kind of “animal control” these hunting activities create but also the tourist economy the depends on the influx of this foreign money to go to broader efforts of conservation.

Infrastructure – The Infrastructure of the United States is not befitting the world’s wealthiest nation. According to the 2017 Infrastructure Report Card, The United States received a D+ overall. This report breaks the various elements down citing the availability of certain public utilities and the integrity of public transportation. With efforts by Verizon and Google to spread Fiber across the United States now defeated due to the exorbitant costs the government may be the key to getting reasonable internet service to those who can’t currently get it and help to provide access to electronic media to all of us. Investors don’t want to pay for the Infrastructure, that’s why even libertarians like having SOME government. America has a long history of doing these kinds of massive public works initiatives which is how we got electricity infrastructure built in America.

Alternative Facts/Scientific Method – I would have absolutely loved to have seen Nye explain the differences between a Theory as the term is used colloquially and what it actually means in science. A great introduction to the peer review system and how a consensus is formed would be a challenge to make engaging and entertaining but it’s really at the heart of the decline of confidence in experts in the United States.

The Internet as a Utility – An explanation of the nature in which we use the internet and how it pertains to how we live our lives. Coding knowledge and experience are emerging as necessary skills much as typing has been for the last few decades.

Privacy – Today we have emerging forms of electronic and untraceable currency based on concepts know as “BlockChains” The Double-edged sword of surveillance both Public and Private Sector collection.

I’m greatly looking forward to what the future hold for the
new show and hope that it will continue to go where most show don’t.

Blow. It. Up. Bill.

The Overview – Torment: Tides of Numenera

0

We’re always saying “They don’t make them like this anymore” in regards to great things we loved as youngsters. Torment: Tides of Numenera is one of those games that people are talking about.

It brings back that traditional RPG goodness and makes it less about combat and more about the story and the world building. You better be prepared for a wall of text and lots of descriptions for each of the areas and characters.

It’s not going to be for action junkies but it’s a great title for people open to interesting stories. There aren’t many combat points in the game but that’s kind of the joy of the game. It successfully ignores the needs to turn each combat into an absolute every five steps.

Friendship stays alive in Confidants Trailers for Persona 5

0

The more I see of Persona 5 the more I realize how much of my life I’ll be losing. One of my favorite parts of the new Persona games is the social aspect.

Social aspects help increase the fusion levels of Persona but they are also the heart of the game. You get to befriend unique people outside of the regular cast and see some interesting stories in the process.

My body is absolutely ready for Persona 5, is yours?. Here are a bunch of videos to keep us salivating:

Mass Effect: Andromeda Trailer features deep voiced villain

Mass Effect: Andromeda has finally shown us a bit more outside of its ambitious gameplay videos. We see a crew made up of both humans and aliens scattered out into the unknown galaxy.

This is also the first time that we get to see what we presume is the main villain, Archon. Is it just me or do all villains have gravely voices made for evil? Take a look at the trailer and let us know how you feel.

The Overview – Yakuza 0

0

Story – Yakuza Zero is canonically the first game in the series. This is the Prequel to the very first Yakuza game that released way back in 2005. This is also the first game in the MAIN series to appear on the Playstation 4. You play as Kazama Kiryu 17 years before he became the legend known as “The Dragon of Dojima.” He’s starting his career as a Yakuza in Kamurocho, by working in the lower ranks of the Dojima family as a Collection’s agent.

Kiryu is an underling to his adoptive father, Shintaro Kazama, The Captain of the Dojima Clan. He’s currently on vacation renting a room out in a fabulous Prison Resort. Kiryu learns that a guy he beat the living crap out for collection money, has died in the same location from a severe case of lead poisoning. Kiryu is blamed for the killing and murder is a serious offense in the Yakuza. If Kiryu were the murderer this would put the blame on the boss, he worked under. The spot for Captain of the Dojima clan is up for grabs while Kiryu’s mentor is locked in prison.

Kiryu opts to leave the clan to help his boss save face and keep his reputation intact. His altruistic methods get him his freedom but fail to appease the wrath of the Dojima Clan against Shintaro Kazama. Now a man without a clan… Kiryu must take to the streets and find the culprit by beating the living tar out of anyone in Kamuroucho.

In Sotenbori, lies the former Yakuza, Goro Majima. Majima has taken up a leadership role in a Cabaret Club after being tortured for a year by his former boss. Majima is a diehard Yakuza, and he’s been trying to find a way to get back into the life of crime. He’s given a job to kill a Makoto Makimura, who turns out to be anything but the person that he was expecting. Majima must choose between taking an innocent life or find out why everyone wants this person dead.

Let’s talk about what Yakuza is all about. It’s the WWE of video game drama. You’ll see many a manly person spouting about honor, crying, and showing off with badass poses. It features some adult themes that are a less manly and more boyish in nature. The boys will chat about women they believe are hot, there will be a half-naked pervert dancing in his underwear, and the will watch scantily clad women in videos and exhale loudly while presumably ejaculating. If this is your first game, just be ready for some juvenile antics. I mean, this is a Japanese game about the Yakuza after all.

Visuals – This is the best the series has ever looked by far. The Yakuza series really pushed the photo-realistic imagery back on Playstation 3. On PS4 it looks to carry over much of that visual fidelity but with more clarity and detail. The live gameplay versions of the characters still lack the depth of the higher resolution characters in the cut-scenes. Which is strange because the Playstation 4 could easily handle the increase in detail.

Gameplay – If there is one thing you need to know is that I love the Yakuza games for more than its over-the-top testosterone-fueled drama and slightly stiff combat system. I enjoy the main story in Yakuza games, but I’m usually more interested in walking around the city and engaging in the activities and sub-stories.

The activities are the most fun I’ve had in a Yakuza title in a long time. I personally enjoy the Bowling, Pool, and sporadic games of Blackjack. There are also two mini-games designed around running a business.  The Host Club lets Majima paint up hostesses and send them out to chat up guys for cash in an entertaining mini-game. As Kiryu, you can buy up businesses and beat the living crap out of people to take over territory. I lost so many hours on these two sub-stories that I almost forgot about the main game.

During my play session, I ran around learning about 80’s technology, embarrassed myself in front of a few kids while helping a woman learn S&M, and watched a dude gyrate his body at the notion of a naked woman. Yakuza is the kind of game you can learn about history one moment and then see a man staring at you in his underwear in the next.

The main reason to play Yakuza is the theme park of activities and sub-stories that you find yourself invested in. I often care more about what’s happening with a random citizen than I do with the whole of the troubles of the Yakuza clans. It’s the delightful Clash of Japanese Culture and Zaniness that brings me back to this series with every release.

Improvements

While the last couple of Yakuza games made a great deal about including different characters with unique fighting styles. Yakuza Zero makes a huge change by giving each of the protagonists three styles to swap between. Majima and Kiryu can swap between three distinct styles that compliment the different characters. Kiryu is the big brawler that uses sheer force to muscle his way through his opponents. Majima is a wild man that uses breakdancing moves and bats as his main arsenal.

You now get cash bonuses for knockdowns and stylistic combat. The better the ass beating the more cash you accumulate during fights. Cash is a bigger deal in Yakuza Zero than any other game before it. Money is now used to improve combat abilities for the main characters. The more lucrative the fights the better the upgrade chances for our anti-heroes.

Yakuza Zero has a version of Debo in the game to snatch your chain. Or, as Yakuza Zero refers to him, the Shakedown Man. Kiryu is usually a beast on the streets that consistently outmatches anyone he battles. The Shakedown Man is a different kind of beast. He’s like a monster in Dark Souls. He’ll wreck Kiryu and steal his money leaving him broken and destitute. He can be avoided but he’s a monster you will eventually wish to conquer.

Kiryu and Goro can finally sprint… thank goodness.

Yakuza Zero still doesn’t have a waypoint system but it’s easy to learn the streets of Kamurocho. Sega finally added a way to keep up with substories by including icons on the map. This makes it easier to find the locations of the next part of the quests. This is probably one of the best additions to the series as it stops all the aimless wandering from previous titles.

A completion list has been added to the series. It’s a form of Achievements that reward the player with upgrades and items in-game. This includes increased funds from combat or longer sprint durations. It’s always good to see an achievement system that accentuates the gameplay.

Declines –

The game engine still loads when entering and exiting buildings. It doesn’t take very long either and it seems like it could have been avoided completely.

The stylistic choice for some of the cut-scenes just isn’t working for me. I get the idea behind these noir style scenes, but they appear tacked on compared to the rest of the cutscenes. They don’t show up very often and it makes me think they were added as a test or late in development.

This game may be on Playstation 4 now but the graphics and animation haven’t changed. Unlike the upcoming Yakuza 6, it looks like Yakuza Zero is resting on its laurels. It’s sharper and more detailed but it still has that Playstation 3 stink. Kamurocho is the same as it has been in previous Yakuza games, so it certainly isn’t pushing the limits of the PS4. The weird movements and lip animations during in-game cut-scenes are slightly jarring. I mean… just look at these awful robotic animations during the host interviews.

The combat is still a bit behind the times when it comes to responsiveness. There are way too many gaps in animations that leave the player open to retaliation, and dodging and blocking isn’t reactionary. I need the game to stop depending on its animations and allow for some real-time defense and evasion. Right now, it’s still stuck in the PS3 era of gaming but hopefully, Yakuza 6 will again fix this issue.

The main storyline can be a bit longwinded. There are conversations that go on for way too long explaining something we understood in the first 2 minutes. Characters often feel the need to reiterate points or explain things that were already understood. I often find myself looking away from the screen after I got the gist of the discussion. It’d probably be easier to stay focused if I spoke Japanese, but even then, Yakuza 0 should be more concise with its storytelling.

Special Moves shouldn’t be linked to the Business storylines. I get that they’re stories in themselves and SEGA really wants us to see the entirety of the game. I just don’t think that pivotal moves should be tied to these rather involved side-story mini-games. I like them, but I also get that some people could see them as a chore.

Escort missions are a detraction, not an addition. It’s annoying to try to keep cannon fodder alive in any game and it’s an unwelcome game design choice for to the Yakuza series.

Conclusion

I had tons of fun playing Yakuza Zero for one main reason. It’s great to see where Kiryu and Majima began their legendary run. Strike that, it’s great to see how Majima became the Mad Dog crazy character that hounds Kiryu through his career. Kiryu doesn’t really change much in personality between games, but this game takes Majima and shows you how he turns into this batshit crazy character.

Despite some of the excessive conversations and convoluted clan twists scattered through the story. This was one of the more enjoyable stories in the Yakuza series to date. Yakuza 4 and 5 didn’t pull me into their stories like the Yakuza 1 – 3 did. Yakuza 0 brings back that classic feel of a Yakuza in a messed-up situation that they must struggle free from.

Beyond that the combat is solid and the multiple stances help keep the game feeling fresh. The side-stories aren’t nearly as wacky as they’ve been in previous years. In fact, they’re a little too focused on the sexual side of things. I swear, I ran into a guy talking about panties, or sex, or some weird fetish way too often. I’m not even saying that the sexual stuff is all bad, but a few of the stories made me recoil from the awkwardness.  All in all, it still has historic gems in there and some crazy appearances that’ll make you buckle over in laughter.

This is a series that prides itself on content-on-top-of-content. The sheer number of things to do in this game will leave most people awestruck. I completed the game in 90 hours and I had to rush to beat the game with loads of sub-stories and special abilities to unlock. I love the Yakuza series and 0 is no different for me. I’ll be right there in line for Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza 6 when they hit shelves.

Hitman 101 Trailer makes me want to be an Agent 47 again

Admittedly, I wasn’t in love with the last Hitman game. It was a very 1-dimensional game that penalizes the player for not doing a hit in a linear style. I was off the cliff for this new game when I heard it was episodic and online focused.

Now that they’ve ironed out all the issues with the game. It looks like an appealing Hitman title and even seems to feature some Rogue-like nuance to it.

I miss Hitman, so maybe I’ll pick this up on a Steam sale at some point.

Persona 5 continues teasing this time showing off the dungeons

0

Persona 5 knows I want to play the living hell out of it. I want to play it until my fingerprints are engrained in the thumbsticks. Every couple of weeks Atlus throws out a tease of the gameplay and the English dub that makes me salivate.

This trailer is no different, this time showing off lots of dungeon footage. Dungeons in this game are called “Palaces,” and they’re a bit different than previous persona games. It looks as if platforming, stealth, and even puzzles will play a bigger role in gameplay.

We’re also shown the Shin Megami Tensei conversation system is back in full effect. Looks like you can talk to Persona to convince them to flee, join, or give items to the crew. I’m stoked and can’t wait to get my hands on this.

Injustice 2 – The Lines Are Redrawn Trailer gives the Heroes a Villain worse than Superman

Injustice 2 showed us that Superman could be a particularly terrible villain if he was to at some point snap and stick his arm clean through the Joker. Now the story looks to pit the many Heroes of the DC universe against each other again, but this time there is a true evil working in the background.

Brainiac is a genius villain who could definitely give the heroes a reason to form the Justice League one last time. My only gripe with seeing Brainiac in this trailer is that they immediately show off someone even more terrifying as “Pre-Order DLC.”

As dangerous as Brainiac is, Darkseid, would be the most challenging foe for these feuding heroes to face off against. Shame, I guess we’ll have to wait for the inevitable Injustice 3.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has to be the only reason to buy a Switch at release

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild looks like the game I’d buy a Nintendo Switch for on release day. I’m not saying I will buy it on release day, but it’s the only game that I’d own when the Switch releases.

Nintendo has taken some big steps at creating a vibrant open-world full of possibilities to explore. I also couldn’t believe that I actually heard real voice-acting from a character in the series.

I’m still worried that the game has framerate drops on its newest system and it comes out in two months. Watching a few videos already has me worried for the longevity of games of this style on an otherwise innovative system.

That being said, this game looks like one of those titles you’ll see take many a GOTY trophy home. I’m just hoping that the game has a deep side-quest system that’s as intriguing as the main story itself.
